RIP Chet Simmons

The world of sports entertainment lost a pioneer as Chet Simmons passed away. I never knew him, personally, but his legacy in building ESPN which went on the air in September, 1979. I was an intern at CNN Sports – which went on the air less than a year later – and in those early years, Sports Tonight, under the leadership of the late Bill McPhail, led the way. Simmons’ was a visionary in network TV and later in cable, much like Mr. McPhail, and though I never had the honor to work for him, I am forever gratefulfor his faith and leadership in taking on the naysayers in broadcast journalism. He was 81-years-young.
