I was observing one of my students at OU, being interviewed by a classmate for an assignment, as she began talking about her mother’s Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis and how it affects her life.
It brings up a good point from my own experiences, that the “angle” of an interview changes based on the homework we do journalistically as well as the compassion for humanity that we possess.
When I prepared for an interview with country star Clay Walker many years ago, I learned about his life with MS, and saw how he takes a serious approach to living his life as an example to others with MS. Initially, I just thought I’d get to see a good show and meet a cool performer. By the time we spoke, I had a much more powerful take on Clay Walker, the man, and it made for a better story.
Below is the piece as it aired on Fox 25 Morning News. I keep up with Clay through his Band Against MS web-site, newsletters and more.
Play on, Clay, Play on.
